App Passwords can be used to help protect your main account password. When entering your password in to other devices or software, such as Outlook or Windows Mail you can use a specific password just for that app. If that password becomes compromised you can just delete it and create a new one. Even better is that the password cannot be used to access webmail and so they will not be able to change any of your account details and take over your account. This is an added layer of protection for you as webmail access has complete control over your account and so the webmail password must be protected.
You can configure up to 4 individual passwords to be used with apps, such as Outlook, your mobile phone and your tablet, etc.
To do this, login to webmail with your normal password
Go to the settings icon on the top menu.
Then select Password from the left hand menu.
Under the App Passwords section click the Plus Sign.
Enter a name to help you idntify the passowrd later
You will be provided with a secure app password.
Copy the password down and/or insert it in to the app.
You can delete the password by clicking the Minus Sign next to the relevant password.
NB:
You cannot use an App password to login to webmail.
Once you have an active App password, you can no longer use your main account password to log in to apps - It can only be used to login to webmail!
After the password has been created and shown to you, you will not be able to see the password again. If you did not copy it down correctly or need to reuse it again in the future and have not made a note of it then you will need to delete it and create a new one.
We recommend that you do not note these passwords down anywhere but enter them striaght in to your device or email client as you can easily delete it and create a new one.
